Shantaram and Swamps of Sadness
I only write about this because I will be “currently” reading this book for the rest of the year (it is freaking long). Katherine read it during our travels in Southeast Asia and Evy also recommended it to me so I decided it was time to give it a go. The first few chapters definitely do a great job of sucking you into the story. Its funny because his descriptions of India make me want to visit the country and stay away form it at the same time. But, like most third world countries I have visited, he describes India as a place filled with these beautiful contradictions that both instill fear and inspire greatly. Visiting the Taj Mahal is still on my list of things I have to do before I die and go to hell. Favorite quote from the book so far?
“The truth is a bully we all pretend to like.”
Yesterday we had heavy rain again and today I decided to go run in a park/forest.
Bad.Idea.
No idea why I even post this scene as its one of the few scenes in the history of film that makes ME want to break down in tears. ARTAX!!!!

i’m reading shantaram now. weird.
I read it and yes, it took me about a year. But it’s amazing. Enjoy.
Johnny Depp optioned the movie rights years ago but I haven’t heard anything since about it moving forward.
I read Shantaram three years ago and got so sucked in that it took no time to finish– but then again, I was living in Beijing at the time and had four friends– needless to say I had a lot of time on my hands.
Oh man, that book really compels you to go to India! His descriptions are so lush, although his musings on love kinda made me want to barf they were so cliche and contrived.
Overall, I think I’m going to read it again soon.
